2019 Future Cities Competition

The Arizona Section of ITE continued its longstanding sponsorship of the Future City Competition, providing financial support and fielding a team of four judges to evaluate over 80 models from across the state.  The Future City Competition program introduces students to engineering concepts through practical applications of math and science. Student teams are guided by volunteer engineers and teachers as they design and build their vision of the urban world of tomorrow.

This year’s theme of the Regional Finals Competition was Powering Our Future”, where teams were challenged to design a resilient power grid for their future city that could withstand and quickly recover from the impacts of a natural disaster, in addition to carefully and systematically preparing for all major aspects that go into planning the city of the future.

The Arizona ITE judges were very impressed with the quality of the physical models and team presentations, with several of our top picks appearing in the top five winners who presented on stage to the celebrity judging panel to determine who would go on to the national competition.

Congratulations to Desert Wind Middle School for winning the Arizona ITE Award for the Best Multimodal Transportation System for their model “Freiheit”.  Freiheit was also awarded the coveted Public Choice Award for their eye-catching and detailed design.

If you have not already participated in judging for or mentoring a student group involved in the Future Cities Competition before, you really should! It is amazing what these young students come up with in their quest to create and present a “city” of the future based on the theme of the year. It is a great opportunity to give back to our next generation of ITE members and to encourage them to continue in the STEM field!

Thank you on behalf of the AZITE Board for Kohinoor Kar who has championed AZITE’s participation in judging for this competition for many years. Your passion and resolve to show how AZITE wants to support the future leaders in our society deserves recognition. So thank you Kohinoor! If you would like to participate in next year’s Competition judging, please contact a member of the AZITE Board!
